Mark Williams welcomes reduction in detention limit

Ceredigion's Welsh Liberal Democrat MP Mark Williams has welcomed the Government's decision to end the 28-day limit on detention without charge and return it to a 14-day limit.

The powers, introduced by the previous Government, have to be renewed annually, and after a review, Home Office Minister Damian Green confirmed that they would not be renewed by the Coalition Government.

Commenting, Mark Williams said:

"28 days detention without charge was one of the symbols of New Labour's illiberal government and has done nothing in the fight against terrorism.

"The arguments over extending detention without charge were always about politics and not public protection.

"The Government are absolutely right to call time on this power, and this suggests we finally have a government prepared to take decisions based on evidence, rather than for political point scoring."
