Aled Roberts portraitAled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Minister and Assembly Member for North Wales said:

"I want to congratulate all a-level students in Wales on their success. Today is the culmination of a huge amount of hard work and dedication and it also the beginning of their next step in their academic career or on their path of choice.

"However, as the congratulations flow, we must not forget students who will be trying to get on to a course through the clearing system. It is worrying that the number of places in universities has gone down and the number of applicants has increased.

"It is also worrying that the gap between English and Welsh A-level results has increased still further. For the last five years, Wales has fallen behind England in A-level results and the gap is growing.

"Coming on top of critical Estyn reports and international comparisons, this is more evidence, if any were needed, that we need a change of direction so that we give teachers the tools and training they need to inspire out children. It is simply not fair that pupils in Wales get £604 less per year spent on their education than in England. Labour has let this funding gap grow year on year and it is naïve to think that that sort of underfunding will not have an impact. Welsh Liberal Democrats will continue to push for the Government to give education the financial priority it deserves."
