An independent report into fuel poverty by Social policy expert Professor John Hills has found that almost 3,000 people in England and Wales die each year because they are not able to afford to keep warm in winter months..

This has been compounded by the particularly harsh winters we have experienced over recent years. If this pattern continues people really are going to struggle to pay the bills to enable them to keep warm and healthy.

It is outrageous that in this day and age thousands of people can't afford to heat their homes during the cold winter months. This issue keeps reappearing each year but still not enough is being done to help the people that are struggling.

I believe that fuel poverty must be one of the Welsh Government's number one priorities. Not a single person in Wales should be forced to live in a cold home, which is why doubling the money available to tackle fuel poverty was one of the key pledges in the Welsh Liberal Democrat manifesto. This funding would radically overhaul the energy efficiency of around an extra 12,000 homes providing the support that is so dearly needed.
