Eluned Parrott AM Delighted Over Community Transport U-Turn

2012 Chwefror 23 3:50 PM

Shadow Transport Minister for the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Eluned Parrott AM was today delighted with the temporary reprieve for 15 Community Transport Schemes.

"I am delighted over this U turn as for a long time I have been asking the Transport Minister what he intends to do when the Community Transport Concessionary Fares Initiative ends and he was always adamant that the scheme would end.

"In answer to my written questions the Minister claimed that 'the scheme is unaffordable as we face very tight spending constraints'. This appears to be a significant U Turn secured in part by Welsh Liberal Democrat pressure.

"Some of the more vulnerable people in my own region would have had to simply stop attending lunch clubs and therapy groups which make a vital contribution to their well being and reducing demand on the NHS budget.

"The Community Transport Concessionary Fares Initiative was set up in 2005 to address the issue of inequality for those elderly and disabled people unable to use their bus-pass on conventional public transport. The Minister was unable to explain how equality requirements would have been addressed when the scheme came to an end.

"I now hope that a long term future can be secured for these 'lifelines'. "
