Welsh Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Aled Roberts has welcomed the news that two of the three South East Wales universities have agreed to work together to combine their institutions and form a brand new institution. The University of Wales, Newport and the University of Glamorgan are now in the process of coming up with detailed plans for the new institution, including deciding on its name.

Commenting, Aled Roberts said:

"I am delighted that this decision has been made voluntarily and without the Education Minister forcing any universities to either merge or face dissolution.

"It is also good to note that the door is still open for other universities to form part of the new institution and Cardiff Met will no doubt be discussing their options in the coming days.

"As ever, the devil is in the detail so there will now be a great deal of work being done in each of the three universities to address the finer points of how the new university will operate and how students, staff and the future of South East Wales will benefit from the newly-configured model."
