Responding to the statement by the Secretary of State for Defence on the Army 2020 review, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Kirsty Williams, said:

"When the Deputy Prime Minister recently came to Wales, I took the opportunity to reiterate the Welsh Liberal Democrat view that the Welsh Cavalry must remain in its current state. I am pleased that our message has been heard loud and clear. It is excellent to see that the Queen's Dragoon Guards will continue to serve as an integral part of the British Army.

"We all know that savings had to be made after the previous Labour Government disgracefully left the country with a £38 billion black hole in our defence budget. Nonetheless, it is of course disappointing to see that two battalions of the Royal Welsh Regiment have been merged into one.

"I welcome the enhanced role for the barracks base in Brecon. This shows that the Coalition Government and the military acknowledge that Wales has had, and will continue to have, an important role to play in the defence of the UK."
