“Welsh Government’s commitment to Welsh language under question again” says Aled Roberts

2013 Gorffenaf 9 4:23 PM

Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrats Shadow Education Minister, has again queried the Welsh Government's commitment to the Welsh Language as it emerged that a Statement on Welsh Language Standards promised for this month will now not be delivered until the autumn.

Commenting, Aled Roberts said:

"Once again we find that the language is being pushed to the bottom of the agenda.

"A Written Statement from Leighton Andrews, the Minister responsible for the Welsh language at the time, clearly stated that an update would be given to Members at the start of the consultation period - mid-July 2013.

"There would then follow a three-month consultation before the Government considered responses with a view to the regulations passing through the Assembly in September/October 2014. They would then come into force in November 2014.

"A new Statement has not been tabled for discussion in the Siambr, and when I raised the issue with the First Minister today he indicated that no statement would be made until the autumn.

"In view of the results of the 2011 Census, and the need for urgent action to protect our language, the First Minister needs to confirm whether it is still his intention for the Standards to be in place by November 2014."
