Michael entered the House of Lords in June 2010. He was previously a member of the National Assembly for Wales for the South Wales East region and was leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats from 2007-2008 and Leader of the Assembly Group from 1999-2007.
In 1996 he was awarded an OBE for his public and political service.
He was a Cardiff City Councillor from 1983-96. He was Group Leader from 1983-96, Joint Leader of the Council from 1987-91.
