Lib Dem plan for fees will mean Assembly can follow the lead - Randerson

2009 Rhagfyr 21 10:22 AM

Following the announcement from Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrats that the party will include a fully costed manifesto commitment to phase-out tuition fees, Welsh Lib Dem Shadow Education Minister, Jenny Randerson AM said:

"This commitment means that where the Lib Dems in the UK Parliament lead, the Assembly Government will have no excuse not to follow.

"While Labour and the Tories collude, with the support of Plaid Cymru to get fees off the agenda until after the General Election, the Lib Dems are the only party offering students the free education they deserve.

"Whether full powers over tuition fees are in the hands of the Assembly by then or not, the huge amounts of money that this policy would bring to Wales, either through Barnet, or through a reformed funding system will mean that Labour and Plaid would have no further excuses not to reverse their betrayal of Welsh students .

The Liberal Democrats will phase out tuition fees over a six year period, beginning with final year students, and ending with the removal of fees completely at the beginning of a second Parliamentary period. The costs will be met by the Government as part of a fully costed spending programme.
