Ceredigion's Welsh Liberal Democrat MP Mark Williams has expressed hisconcern after a report by the Wales Audit Office identified significantfailings in the response to tackling flood management.

The report, published last week, calls for Welsh Assembly GovernmentMinisters to show "stronger leadership" on the issue in light ofconcerns over the future of many areas in light of coastal erosion andflooding.

The report also acknowledged that while some collaboration had takenplace between the Welsh Assembly Government and the UK Government, itsaid this collaboration could be more effective, and highlighted theimportance of coastal road and rail links such as the Ceredigion coastalroad, and the Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury rail line.

The report included Aberaeron, Borth and Aberystwyth in Ceredigion asareas that are particular under threat from flooding in the future.Mark Williams will be attending the opening of the coastal flooddefences in Aberaeron next week.

Commenting, Mark Williams said:

"Flooding is a major issue for the future of the County, and the picturepainted by the Wales Audit Office is a bleak one.

"The report highlights areas where the Assembly Government could domore, and they must now take action on the report's recommendations tohelp safeguard our communities.

"The report also found that collaboration between the Welsh AssemblyGovernment and the UK Government could be improved, and I hope thatthere will now be an increased emphasis on joint working where it isnecessary.

"There have been some very welcome projects supported by the AssemblyGovernment, such as the flood defences in Aberaeron, but this reportshows that more needs to be done to tackle this problem."
