Welsh Lib Dems Lead Way With Code of Conduct

Following the controversy surrounding Members allowances in the House of Commons and the National Assembly for Wales, the Welsh Liberal Democrats have unanimously passed a motion at their Autumn Conference calling for all existing parliamentarians and prospective candidates to sign a Code of Conduct on Elected Members Allowances and Transparency.

The Code of Conduct states that no member of the National Assembly, Westminster or the European Parliaments should profit from the tax-payer with regard to their allowances and that there should be complete transparency in how allowances are spent.

Kirsty Williams, Leader of the Welsh Lib Dems said:

"As elected representatives of the people of Wales, it is our job to ensure complete transparency, especially when it comes to taxpayers money. The Welsh Liberal Democrats want Welsh voters to have 100% confidence in our commitment to fair, honest and transparent politics and this Code of Conduct provides that guarantee.

"Today, we have agreed that any Member of Parliament or the National Assembly for Wales who does not sign the Code of Conduct will not be an official Welsh Liberal Democrat Candidate or Member of their respective group.

"We want a fresh start for Wales and we want to regain the trust of the people who send us to work on their behalf. This is a first step towards that goal."
