Commenting, Mark Williams said:

"These figures are a reminder of how careful people need to be aboutproviding their financial details online.

"Part of the increase will be as a direct result of the increase inpeople using online banking, but increasingly criminals are usingsophisticated phishing scams and other cons to target unsuspectingvictims.

"Consumers should always go directly to a bank's site, and never througha link in an email. Never give out PIN numbers or card and accountdetails in an email or over the phone.

"It's also a good idea to have up to date anti-virus software on yourcomputer, and if you do notice anything unusual on your statement, contact your bank immediately.

"Online banking is a convenient and useful tool if used safely, butconsumers need to be aware of how easy it is for their details to fallinto the wrong hands."
