Kirsty Williams: Only Lib Dems will give Wales a Fair Slice of the Cake

The Welsh Liberal Democrats will today call for an urgent review of the Barnett formula, by which funding is allocated to Wales from Westminster.

Kirsty Williams, joined by Assembly Members and Mps at the Liberal Democrat Conference in Bournemouth, will call on Gordon Brown s Labour Government to give Wales a fair funding settlement.

Kirsty Williams said: "It s time Wales got its fair slice of the Barnett cake. Only this week we saw Rhodri Morgan and Ieuan Wyn Jones go cap in hand to Gordon Brown, asking for another £100m. Last year they were given the money, this year they may not - This is unfair, unsustainable and undemocratic. Our rivals seem afraid to rock the boat, the Welsh Lib Dems will not stand by and allow this to continue.

Holtham confirmed that Wales is simply not being funded fairly, that year on year our communities and public services are being denied the money we are entitled to. The status quo is devastating for Wales and shows a lack of respect for Wales and devolved Government, from Labour in Westminster."

The Liberal Democrats have prepared an early day motion to go to parliament calling for an urgent review of Barnett, following Holtham s findings that Wales could be losing out by as much as 8.5bn over ten years.

Mrs Williams said: "The funding deficit is all the more damaging during a recession and facing necessary huge public spending cuts. Now is the time to revise the formula and give Wales a fair deal."
