AM expresses concern as Senedd coverage is axed by S4C2

2009 Gorffenaf 23 10:22 AM

Eleanor Burnham, Assembly Member for North Wales has reacted strongly to the news that Senedd proceedings will no longer be televised live on S4C2. Eleanor, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Culture said: "I am very concerned at this latest move which further reduces public service broadcasting provision in Wales. At a time when we in the Assembly are doing our utmost to make more information available about what we do, television coverage of important debates and questions to ministers is being withdrawn. "Public knowledge of what goes on in the Assembly is patchy and in anticipation of further powers for Wales now is the time when we should all be working together towards building a better understanding of this democratic institution. "I appreciate that the Assembly provides the Senedd TV facility via its website, and that a new "Democracy Live" service will be made available online by the BBC. However, it must be recognised that whilst the majority of Welsh households have at least one television, not so many have access to the internet. Additionally, some parts of Wales are struggling with inferior broadband speeds or are unable to access Welsh or Welsh language TV channels. Some have problems with both. How can people feel involved and engaged in the Welsh political system if they are not able to get adequate information? "I will be writing to the Minister for his comments on how he intends to make the Assembly and its work more accessible in the light of this decision."
