Ceredigion's Welsh Liberal Democrat MP Mark Williams has raised concerns about the poor transport links between West Wales and the rest of the UK, and the impact that has on the local economy, during a Welsh Affairs Select Committee evidence session on inward investment.

Mark WilliamsTransport expert Professor Stuart Cole, Milford Haven Port Authority Chief Executive Alec Don, and Ian Jarman of Owens Road Services gave evidence on the importance of transport networks to the Welsh economy, and where improvements could be made to transport infrastructure.

During the session, Mark Williams asked about the prospect of improving the rail service between Aberystwyth and London and the roads in the area.

In their evidence, all three witnesses stressed that good transport links were a prerequisite to attracting businesses and tourists to an area.

Commenting, Mark Williams said:

"Ceredigion has struggled to attract investment for many years as the result of poor transport links.

"The rail service now has the capacity for an hourly service, and it is possible that Arriva Trains Wales will have another look at the possibility of a direct London service, so there is scope for some improvement.

"Without fast, reliable transport networks we will never be able to attract the businesses and visitors that can boost our economy."
