Shadow Education Minister welcomes commitment to HE consultation

Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Minister Aled Roberts, has welcomed the decision by Education Minister Leighton Andrews to accept Opposition calls that the consultation process on reconfiguration in Higher Education should either provide evidence in support of current plans or result in alternative proposals. The motion on reconfiguration in Higher Education was passed unopposed in the Assembly today and consultation is expected to begin in the New Year.

Commenting, Aled Roberts said:

"I am very pleased that the Minister has committed to start consultation on prospective mergers early in the new year.

"However, it is essential that any changes that result from the advice given to the Minister by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) will be made as a result of informed and evidence-based consideration.

"So far, I am not convinced that there is enough evidence to show that the Minister's plans for bigger universities will make them more successful. More scrutiny is needed and today's debate was an important step in that process.

"Unless the views of students, lecturers and all those involved in Higher Education are given due regard then the whole system is in jeopardy.

" I would urge everyone involved in HE to make their feelings known to the Minister when the consultation begins."
