Kirsty WilliamsKirsty Williams, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, has added her party's backing to the UK Government's policy of allowing same-sex couples to marry.

In the National Assembly, Kirsty Williams asked whether the Welsh Government had responded to the UK Government's consultation. Equalities Minister said that the Welsh Government hadn't taken part in the same-sex marriage consultation.

The UK Government's consultation closes on the 14th of June and the Welsh Liberal Democrat will be submitting their response to it.

Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader said:

"We wholeheartedly support the UK Government's commitment to allow same-sex couples to marry. The introduction of civil partnerships for same-sex couples, back in 2004, was a welcome first step, but now there is a growing consensus supporting the right of same-sex couples to have the same legal recognition as heterosexual couples.

"We believe that that to deny one group of people the same opportunities offered to another is not only discrimination, but is not fair. Love is the same, straight or gay, so the civil institution should be the same too.

"There will be opposition to giving full and equal status to gay marriage and other issues facing LGBT people - but I am confident as the debate on these issues intensifies, more people will hopefully share our views that LGBT rights are also human rights."
