Latest literacy report underlines urgent need for improvement: Aled Roberts AM

2012 Mehefin 20 2:49 PM

Welsh Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Aled Roberts has acknowledged Estyn's latest report on literacy in Welsh schools as further underlining urgent need for improvement. The report highlights inconsistencies in standards and application of literacy skills in Wales' schools and also makes recommendations for tracking and monitoring the impact of literacy strategies. It also recommends the provision of improved guidance for teachers.

Commenting, Aled Roberts said:

"This report is yet more evidence showing that there is an urgent need for improvement in literacy skills.

"I am very pleased to see that Estyn recommends the tracking and monitoring of strategies, although why that isn't happening already is puzzling.

"We know that prospective employers have expressed their concern about literacy standards in Wales and we also want our young people to be able to communicate effectively.

"The National Literacy Programme has the potential to raise standards, but its existence is futile unless it is suitably monitored and has the full endorsement of education professionals.

"The Welsh Labour Government now needs to work closely with the profession to make sure that standards are improved and Welsh schoolchildren thrive."
