Kirsty Williams, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, has today given her backing to Winston Roddick, a former police constable, barrister, judge and Counsel General of the National Assembly, who is standing as an independent candidate in the Police and Crime Commissioner election in North Wales.

Kirsty Williams said:

"The Welsh Liberal Democrats are not putting candidates up for these elections as we don't believe in the politicisation of the police force. However, I am backing Winston Roddick because, as an independent candidate, he is free from party political pressure. The people of North Wales want a police force that will work for them - not a political party.

"His expertise and experience in policing, tackling crime and promoting justice is beyond doubt. Having been a police constable, a barrister and a judge, he has a firm understanding of the criminal justice system and policing and that is why I am declaring my support for Winston Roddick.

"British policing is admired for its independence and by electing Winston Roddick, I believe that he will carry out the role of Police and Crime Commissioner acting independently of political interference while holding the police force to account and making our streets safer."
