Welsh Government guilty of ‘An irresponsible breach of commercial confidentiality’ over Cardiff Airport purchase decision

2013 Ionawr 8 5:59 PM

Eluned Parrott, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Business Minister has today accused the Welsh Government an irresponsible breach of commercial confidentiality with regards to their pledge to buy Cardiff Airport. Speaking after an urgent question in the Assembly this afternoon, Eluned Parrott AM said:

"Yet again Welsh Government has completely failed to explain the reasoning for pledging to buy Cardiff Airport.

"Welsh Liberal Democrats want to see a successful airport but any investment must give taxpayers value for money.

"The Minister has refused to answer specific questions on costs, hiding behind the excuse of commercial confidentiality - but this announcement was itself the most irresponsible breach of commercially sensitive information imaginable.

"By announcing the purchase in the middle of negotiations, it appears that the Welsh Government has handed the whip hand to the seller in setting a price. The Welsh Government will now have to pay the price Abertis is asking, or face a humiliating public climb-down. Time will tell what deal will be struck but I still have serious concerns about the Welsh Government's naïve negotiating tactics, and what that means for the public purse."
