AM concern for potential job losses on Anglesey

2013 Ionawr 11 2:01 PM

Aled Roberts, North Wales Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, has called on the Welsh Government to intervene following the news that 350 job are under threat at Welsh Country Foods on Anglesey.

Following a decision by a leading supermarket to de-list Welsh Country Foods as a supplier, 350 jobs could be at risk on the island. Just a few months ago Aled Roberts warned that jobs could be threatened if buyers were not found for a series of meat and poultry plants including those based in Gaerwen on Anglesey.

Aled Roberts AM said:

"This is a very worrying period for the workers at Welsh Country Foods. There was uncertainty over the future of abattoirs in Wales just a few months ago when VION decided to sell off its meat and poultry plants. It seem that the concerns at the time have been realised.

"Welsh Country Foods has a critical role to play in ensuring Welsh produce reaches the marketplace. I am calling on the Welsh Government to intervene because while 350 much needed jobs are under threat on the island, this could have a damaging knock-on effect on the local economy and Welsh agriculture."
