Little joy for Labour as figures show Wales still lagging behind England in employment figures

Employment amongst adults across Wales has fallen by 0.4% and unemployment rose by 0.4% during the last quarter, whilst England saw the employment rate rise by 0.4% over the same period the latest figures show.

Unemployment in Wales stood at 8.6% up slightly on the last figures (8.4%) compared to 7.7% in England and a UK average of 7.8%.

Commenting on the figures, Eluned Parrott AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Economy Spokesperson said:

"Across the UK this is good news, but it goes to show just how much more work Carwyn Jones, Edwina Hart and the Welsh Labour Government still have to do to get the our economy in Wales moving at the same pace as the rest of the UK.

"Wales is behind England in terms of our plans for Enterprise Zones and our Apprenticeship Programme is way behind England's.

"I'm pleased to see across the UK as a whole that the picture is continuing to improve with rising employment, falling unemployment and the number of people claiming JSA is also falling. It paints a picture of an economy that is recovering after the chaos caused by the last Labour Government, but we must make sure that Wales keeps pace."
