Welsh Labour Government policy failing the Welsh Uplands - William Powell

2013 Mehefin 4 3:39 PM

William Powell AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Rural Affairs, has criticised Welsh Labour Government policy for failing the Welsh Uplands and not delivering on its Programme for Government.

William Powell AM, Mid and West Wales, said:

"The Welsh Labour Government's Programme for Government claims that it will 'work with partners to support the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the Welsh Uplands'.

"The unilateral decision to strip Welsh hill farmers of essential dedicated Less Favoured Areas (LFA) support utterly undermines this commitment, and has the potential to significantly damage the economy of the Welsh Uplands.

"Thanks to the policies of the Welsh Labour Government alone Wales now faces being placed at a competitive disadvantage with farmers across the UK and the wider EU by radically reducing support for their businesses.

"While simply throwing money at farming is not an answer in itself, the Welsh Labour Government's decision will specifically target Welsh farms.

"Such a reduction serves to undermine the economic sustainability of the Welsh Uplands and threatens the social fabric of rural Wales by jeopardising traditional farming methods and farm business models."
