‘Clarity on sprinklers is welcome, but progress needed on mortgage scheme’- Peter Black

2013 Gorffenaf 17 12:45 PM

Responding to the Housing Minister's statement on Stimulating Home Building in Wales, Peter Black, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Housing Minister, said:

"As Wales is in desperate need of new homes, and bearing in mind the tough economic climate, it is right that the financial strain on house builders is seriously considered.

"I welcome the certainty that has come today on sprinklers and Part L of building regulations. This is a sensible and proportionate approach that prioritises safety and sustainability without imposing unsustainable costs onto house builders.

"Yet, I'm hugely disappointed that there still has been no progress on the mortgage guarantee scheme and that work on the shared equity scheme is still only at a very early stage. This morning in Committee, the Minister had no details other than a vague sense of direction and he doesn't expect this scheme to be ready until the end of the year. That isn't good enough.

"Mortgage finance availability is still the biggest obstacle to new homes being built and people being able to get on the housing ladder. Until the Welsh Labour Government addresses that problem, as the UK Government has done so in England, then Wales will continue to fall behind."
