“Health Boards’ plans should state when targets will met” – Kirsty Williams

Kirsty Williams, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats has today questioned why detailed plans, produced by Health Boards to meet performance targets do not include timelines on when they expect to meet these targets.

In Health Committee this morning, it was revealed that the Ambulance Service Trust and each Local Health Board have been asked to provide detailed plans and trajectories to demonstrate their commitment to achieving a range of national performance targets.

In response to these plans, the Health Minister revealed that cancer waiting times targets will be met in October. However, he was unable to say when A&E and referral to treatment targets would be met.

Kirsty Williams AM said:

"Cancer waiting times targets in Wales haven't been met since back in 2008, so I welcome the Health Minister's assurances today that these important targets will be met in October. The Welsh Liberal Democrats will be keeping a close eye on these targets to hold the Minister to his word.

"However, it is extremely worrying that the Minister was unable to reveal when other important targets, such as A&E waiting times and referral to treatment times, will be met.

"Each Local Health Board has produced a detailed plan to demonstrate its commitment to achieving a range of national targets. Yet, surely a detailed plan that aims to reach targets should have timeline for when these targets are expected to be met?

"I asked the Minister today if he would be willing to make these plans public, something that he was willing to do. I very much welcome this openness and transparency. I will be asking for copies of these plans, so that we too can scrutinise them."
