Awful report on cardiac services must be acted on - Peter Black

2013 Medi 26 2:06 PM

Responding to the review of cardiac surgery services at Morriston Hospital Swansea, Peter Black, South Wales West Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, said:

"The people of South Wales and patients who rely on Morriston Hospital for cardiac surgery have been let down by the health board and the Welsh Labour government. This is an unacceptable way to run a service.

"Abertawe Bro Morgannwg health board have known for over a decade that there have been issues at the cardiac unit. The unit has faced significant problems since it opened back in 1997 and yet issues of serious concern are still coming to light.

"While I commend the health board for conducting a review into its own services and making their findings public, they now need to act on those recommendations and ensure that the situation at the hospital improves. Reports and recommendations in the past have fallen on deaf ears to the detriment of patients. This critical report must not be ignored.

"Welsh Labour Ministers really should hang their heads in shame when they look back at their record of handling Wales' NHS. Wales has the longest ambulance waiting times in any part of mainland UK, urgent cancer treatment times not met since 2008 and A&E targets that have never been met. The list goes on."
