Mark Williams asks Welsh Agricultural Minister to assist farmers and fishermen following recent storms

Mark Williams MPCeredigion's Welsh Liberal Democrat MP Mark Williams has written to Welsh Agriculture Minister Alan Davies, asking whether he will be implementing similar schemes in Wales to that announced in England to protect farmers and fishermen in flood affected areas.

The UK Government has announced a £10 million Farming Recovery Fund, to assist farmers with the restoration of grassland, restoration of arable and horticultural land, restoring vehicle access to farms, and improving drainage. The UK Government also announced last week measures to assist fishermen, reimbursing costs of replacing damaged equipment, and removing Lighthouse Dues.

Commenting, Mark Williams said;

'We know the importance of the farming and fishing industries to Ceredigion, and across Wales, so I hope the Assembly Agriculture Minister will follow suit and announce similar proposals to support these industries and businesses as they recover from the recent floods and storms.

'I know of fishermen along our coastline who have only been able to fish for a few days in total since the beginning of December, and farmers suffering severe setbacks due to the weather. The impact of the storms and bad weather on the agricultural industry has been manifest, and I hope the Minister will outline detailed plans for assistance very soon.'
